You may have heard that some therapists are starting to use AI note-taking tools (also called AI scribes) to help with their session notes. This post explains what that means, why it’s used, how your privacy is protected, and what you can do if you have questions or concerns.
What Is AI Note-Taking?
AI note-taking tools use artificial intelligence to help therapists write or organize their notes after a session. They might transcribe what was said, summarize key points, or help structure the notes - but the therapist always reviews and edits everything before it’s saved.
Think of it as an assistant that helps with paperwork so the therapist can spend more time focusing on clients, not on typing. It can also help the therapist create customize worksheets and create reports and other documents.
Why Therapists Use AI Scribes
Writing detailed notes after every session takes time and concentration. AI can help by:
Reducing the time spent on paperwork
Keeping records organized and consistent
Making sure details aren’t forgotten
Allowing therapists to stay more present during sessions
The goal isn’t to replace the human side of therapy - it’s to make the administrative side smoother and more accurate, allowing therapists to be more present in session and possibly even have more time to invest in learning and training.
Benefits for Clients
Using AI responsibly can actually improve the therapy experience. It can:
Help your therapist stay more focused on you during sessions
Lead to more complete and timely notes
Support better follow-up care between sessions
When done right, AI helps therapists spend more energy on care and less on clerical work.
Important Things to Know
There are also some important safeguards and responsibilities when using AI tools:
Confidentiality:Â Any system used must follow Canadian privacy laws, including PIPEDAÂ and PHIPA.
Data Security:Â Information must be encrypted and securely stored.
Consent: Your therapist must explain how the tool works and get your informed consent before using it.
Oversight:Â The therapist remains fully responsible for the accuracy and confidentiality of your notes.
You always have the right to ask questions or say no if you’re not comfortable.
How Your Privacy Is Protected
In Ontario, therapists must make sure any platform that stores or processes client information is PHIPA- and PIPEDA-compliant. This means:
Data is encrypted and protected
Only authorized professionals can access it
You can withdraw consent at any time
No AI system can be used without your permission
AI medical scribes do not feed open AIs
No audio is stored
Therapists are expected to carefully choose secure, health-compliant tools and to discuss them openly with clients before using them.
You're Encouraged to Ask Questions
If you ever wonder how your information is handled, please ask. Good therapy is built on trust, transparency, and consent — and that includes how technology is used.

AI note-taking is one example of how technology can support — not replace — human connection in therapy. When used thoughtfully, it helps therapists focus on what matters most: you.
