What is art therapy?

Art therapy combines the creative process with psychotherapy to support wellbeing. Using arts-based methods as part of the therapeutic process - thoughts, feelings and  experiences can be explored, expressed, and understood in a way that may otherwise feel  difficult to articulate. Art therapists are trained professionals with expertise in counseling  psychology and fine arts achieved through graduate level education. Through the use of  artmaking, discussions, and reflections, art therapists can support individuals in problem solving, developing insights and self-awareness, improving self-esteem, managing stress,  and enhancing interpersonal skills.

What are some benefits of art therapy?

Bringing artmaking into the therapeutic process provides clients with opportunities to:

• Share non-verbally, allowing connection to and expression of thoughts and feelings that may be difficult to communicate due to factors such as (but not limited to) age, trauma, cognitive impairments or physical health conditions.

• Become aware of and work through difficult emotions

• Increase self-awareness and self- discovery

• Reduce anxiety and agitation

• Build interpersonal skills

• Experience freedom of choice and a sense of achievement

• Engage in pleasure and playfulness

What is an art therapy session like?

Each session tends to include a check-in, artmaking, discussion, and closure. No prior art  experience is necessary! Art therapy focuses on the process of art making rather than on  the final product. Art making may be structured (the therapist offers a directive based on  the client's needs and goals) or unstructured (i.e. the client creates art spontaneously).  The art therapist may create art alongside the client in a collaborative and intentional way.  During discussion we may talk about the art, its meaning, the process of creating, or what  thoughts/feelings may have come up for you. The structure of each session is fluid and  adapted to fit the individual needs of the client.
