Supporting young minds as they grow, adapt, and thrive
Close-Up Of Women

A safe space for big feelings and growing pains

Growing up has always had its challenges, but navigating childhood and adolescence today comes with an entirely unique set of pressures. From school expectations and social dynamics to identity development and changing brains, young people have a lot to process.

At Charron Psychotherapy Services, we provide a warm, engaging, and compassionate space designed specifically for younger minds. Many of our Associate Therapists work with children and teens, helping them make sense of their emotions, build resilience, and discover sustainable ways to handle life's inevitable ups and downs.

Age groups we support

We tailor our therapeutic approach to match the developmental stage of your child, ensuring they feel understood and respected at every age:

Children (Ages 4–11)
Focused on emotional expression, behavioral support, and building foundational coping skills through age-appropriate, interactive methods.
Teens (Ages 12–17)
Focused on identity, navigating social and academic pressures, emotional regulation, interpersonal skills and fostering healthy independence.

Common concerns we help with

Children and teens express distress differently than adults —sometimes through emotional outbursts, and other times by turning inward. We commonly support families navigating:

Navigating ADHD, neurodivergence, and learning differences
Managing school-related stress, perfectionism, and academic performance
Suicidal ideation and self-harm

Depression, persistent low mood, or social withdrawal
Grief, loss, and processing difficult or traumatic experiences

Self-esteem, body image, and identity exploration
Family changes, such as parental separation, divorce, or moving

Parent-child conflict and communication challenges

Anxiety, chronic worry, and panic

How we adapt therapy for younger minds

We know that sitting on a couch and talking for 50 minutes doesn't work for every young person. We adapt our evidence-based modalities, including CBT, ACT, DBT skills, and Art Therapy, to fit their developmental needs:

For Children: We use creative, interactive, and art-based and play-informed techniques. Because play is a child’s natural language, we use games, drawing, and storytelling to help them identify big emotions and practice calming strategies without feeling put on the spot.

For Teens: We focus on building a genuine partnership. Sessions are highly conversational and practical, giving teens a private, respectful sounding board to explore who they are and learn concrete skills to manage stress, boundaries, and relationships.

The role of parents & caregivers

Healing doesn't happen in a vacuum; the home environment is a crucial piece of a young person’s well-being. How we involve parents depends heavily on the age and developmental needs of the client.

Children & Minors

For younger children, parents are a vital part of the therapeutic team. While the child has private time in sessions to build trust, we frequently collaborate with parents to share practical tools, discuss progress, and offer parenting strategies that reinforce the child’s growth at home.

Teens & Mature Minors

In Ontario, preteens and teenagers who demonstrate the capacity to understand the nature, benefits, and risks of therapy can consent to their own treatment as "mature minors." For therapy to be effective, teens need to know their space is strictly confidential. While we actively encourage teens to involve their families, we protect their privacy unless there is a safety concern, keeping parents informed on general themes and progress rather than specific session details.

Why early support matters

Addressing emotional and behavioural challenges early in life provides young people with an invaluable foundation. Rather than waiting for a small worry to grow into a deeply ingrained habit, early intervention helps children and teens develop a robust emotional toolkit. By learning psychological flexibility and healthy coping mechanisms now, they build the sustainable resilience needed to carry them successfully into adulthood.

What your family can expect

We want the therapeutic process to feel seamless, transparent, and deeply reassuring for both you and your child from day one.

1. Tailoring our approach to your child's age

Because a six-year-old and a sixteen-year-old have completely different needs, parental involvement looks a little different depending on your child's stage of life:

  • For younger children: You are an active partner in the process. Parents are heavily involved in the early stages to help gather history and set goals. Throughout therapy, we will check in as-needed so you can help monitor progress and implement supportive strategies right at home.

  • For older teens: Parents usually step in to manage the practical side of things—like getting therapy started, scheduling, and billing. However, to make therapy a truly safe, effective space, your teen's session content remains entirely private. We do not share what they discuss with us unless we have serious concerns about their safety or the safety of others, allowing us to build a deep foundation of trust.

2. Building a safe connection

Once the initial paperwork and history are out of the way, the first few sessions are dedicated entirely to building genuine comfort and trust. We never force a child or teen to talk about things they aren't ready to share; instead, we move entirely at their pace to ensure they feel safe and understood.

3. Ongoing family communication

As therapy progresses, we carefully balance parental support with clinical privacy. Depending on your child's age and legal consent structure, we will regularly keep you informed on general therapeutic themes and practical tools you can reinforce at home, while firmly protecting the confidential space your child needs to heal and grow.
